Decoding the Certifications on Your Wellness Products
If you've spent any time shopping for supplements or wellness products recently, you've probably noticed a lot of logos on labels. Organic. Non-GMO. Regenerative.
We talk about these terms a lot at Elevate Organic, because they're the foundation everything we make is built on. So here's a straightforward breakdown of what each one actually means, to help you understand what is on your supplement labels.
USDA Organic
This is probably the one you're most familiar with. USDA Organic is a federally regulated certification that means a product was made without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, GMOs, antibiotics, or artificial growth hormones. For animal products specifically, it requires access to pasture and prohibits the routine use of antibiotics.
It's a meaningful standard and a genuinely important baseline. When you see it on a label, you know certain things were kept out of the product.
Regenerative Organic Certified®
Regenerative Organic Certified®, ROC™ for short, builds on top of USDA Organic and goes further in a few specific directions. It was developed to address what organic certification alone doesn't cover, with a focus on three areas: soil health and land management, animal welfare, and farmer and worker fairness.
What makes ROC™ distinct is the emphasis on actively rebuilding the land over time rather than just maintaining it. Farms have to demonstrate that their practices are improving soil health, not just meeting a minimum standard.
A2 Dairy
A2 is not a certification, but a distinction in dairy protein that's worth understanding. All cow's milk contains a protein called beta-casein, but there are two types: A1 and A2. The difference comes down to genetics, and it affects how the protein behaves in your body during digestion.
You won't see an A2 logo on a certification seal the way you would with organic or ROC™. It's simply a sourcing standard we hold ourselves to because we believe it makes a real difference in how our products feel for the people using them.
CCOF Certified Organic and the Non-GMO Project
CCOF, California Certified Organic Farmers, is a USDA-accredited organic certifying agency. While USDA sets the national organic standard, certifying agents like CCOF are the ones doing the on-the-ground verification work: farm inspections, documentation review, and ongoing compliance checks. CCOF certification means the organic claim has been rigorously verified, not just self-reported.
Alongside that, the Non-GMO Project is an independent third-party organization that tests and verifies products to confirm they're free of genetically modified organisms. Together, CCOF and Non-GMO Project verification cover both the farming practices and the ingredient integrity, two different angles on the same commitment to clean sourcing.
The Bigger Picture
At Elevate Organic, these certifications aren't boxes we check for marketing purposes. They're the standards we built our sourcing around from the beginning, because we believe the quality of what goes into the soil, the animal, and the product directly affects what it can do for you.
